A sedimentary rock with a wide range of uses in construction and landscaping limestone is used for drainage, roads, first layer of foundations, and pads. White in color, crushed limestone has many utilitarian uses as well as being ideal for decorative landscaping.

Gardeners, garden architects, or landscapers use lava rocks for both decorative flair and water retaining purposes. Larger stones can be placed on pathways to add color or used as border decorations. Smaller lava rocks are used as mulch to collect water and to avoid erosion. Unlike wood mulches, it will not attract wood pests, such as termites and ants. The porous material easily stores water on hot days and supplies roots with the liquid. Heat retained in the lava stones throughout the day will be released during the night, which gives the ground a balanced temperature level.
